November is traditionally the month when we welcome sailors from across the globe to Opua and to our great little yacht club over the water. The Opua Cruising Club offers a fantastic base for social activities to cruisers, and with ‘Supporter Membership’ available from just $45 (or $65 for a couple or family), it’s excellent value too – even if you’re only staying with us for a short time.

This month’s Tell Tales has lots to interest those from at home and abroad, with all the usual news and reports from our racing, cruising and social calendars. You can also check the online calendar on the What’s On page for up-to-date details of events at OCC.

Inside this month’s Tell Tales, you’ll also find a story from one of our members about his near-death experience after falling out of his dinghy. This seems to be an all-too-common occurrence around these parts, and Graeme’s story is a sombre reminder to us all not to get too complacent around our ‘home waters’. If you’re heading back to your yacht, particularly alone at night, it makes very good sense to wear a lifejacket and carry a waterproof VHF.

Tell Tales November also has details of the forthcoming Snapper Fishing Contest to be held at OCC in December, in conjunction with the Bay of Islands Sports & Fishing Club, who are reciprocal members with OCC. This event should be great fun, and with a special ‘yachtie anglers’ division, there’s even more reason for OCC members to take part.

And finally, having just come back from my first overseas cruise, I’d like to personally offer a BIG welcome to fellow cruisers from near and far. Please do consider joining the OCC for just $45 – it really is a unique and brilliant little club.

Enjoy the new Tell Tales, and please keep those stories coming in!
