Elliott 5.9 Class wins Champion of Champions Regatta at RAYC
A brilliant performance by Cam Horne and his crew from Slam Dunk, Brzo and Blurr. Second was Craig Coulam who is currently racing in the 5.9’s, although he was representing the Flying 15s. Sailors were Cam Horne (Slam Dunk), Phil Quinn (Blurr), Andy Robertson (Blurr), Grant Mckinnon (Brzo) and Andrew Clarke (Slam Dunk). The event was sailed in the Platu’s.
2012 Travellers Series – Opua report
Click here [http://www.sail-world.com/NZ/The-Blurr-wins-2012-Elliott-5.9-Traveller-Series-opener-at-Opua/97541] for a report on the Opua event last weekend. This was an excellent regatta hosted brilliantly as usual by the Opua Cruising CLub. Most of the out-of-town sailors stayed as a group at the PineLodge, Opua and the venue works really well with a shared BBQ and outdoor dining area, and a pool (it was a bit cold for the pool!).
You must be a financial member of the Association to contest the Travellers Series – if you need to join up, contact the Association through its facebook page (www.facebook.com/elliott5.9 ) to get the application form.
The next event in the Traveller series is Onerahi, July 28-29. Other events are the Auckland Champs 15-16 September (RAYC) Marsden Cove 27-28 October and the North Island Champs at Turangi 17-18 November.
For Auckland boats we intend to contest some of the RAYC Winter Series (fortnightly on Sundays) which starts with Sail Akarana on 16-17 June. Contact me if you wish to discuss some scheduling. RAYC is offering hardstand space in an effort to grow the local Auckland fleet racing. Contact me if you require space – currently Voodoo, Blurr and Blownaway will be based there.
Keep up with the Class
Boats that we know of for sale
– Spurt is for sale in Christchurch – contact Brian Tennant. It has been listed on Trademe [email@example.com]
– Eagle is for sale in Queenstown – listed on Trademe
– Spin City (ex Crowded House) is for sale in Blenheim – contact Ian Fyfe [firstname.lastname@example.org]
There may be a couple more boats for sale which we are following up on.
Changes of ownership
Bandit (ex Elliott Goblit) has changed hands to Leo McCullough, Watson David and Brenton Low (Whangarei). The boat is currently based in Opua and is racing with the local fleet. We understand the name will be reverting to Elliott Goblit.
We have word that two or possibly three other boats are under negotiation to come into Auckland crews who will be new owners for the class, while there is further interest in Auckland and Opua.
2013 is a big year
Next year, 2013, will be the 30th anniversary of the Elliott 5.9 racing competitively in NZ. I have attached a PDF of a report from Sea Spray of the first Trailer Yacht Nationals that the class attended in 1983. The three boats (Brzo, Mod (Blurr) and Zoot Allures) that competed are still racing today – in fact all raced at the weekend at Opua. That’s quite an achievement.
To mark the occasion, we are hoping to join the BMW Auckland Regatta in June. Please pencil in the dates (21-24 March 2013). This is not yet confirmed but we have approached the organisers.
