Racing at Opua Cruising Club

Opua Cruising Club has a busy racing calendar that runs all year round. In summer there is a Wednesday evening series with three competitive divisions, two using spinnakers and one without. Plus every Friday is either a rum race or a ladies race (alternating weeks), and there are regular races at weekends too, such as the two-handed series.

In winter, the warm Northland climate still allows us to get out racing every Sunday, usually with a winter series race one week, and a ladies winter series race the next week.

Check the What’s On page for details of all forthcoming races. For all racing enquiries, contact our Racing Officer David Krebs on the OCC Committee.

Entries are open for the 2011-2012 Racing Season

Please fill in your racing entry form online, or alternatively you can download the OCC Race Entry Form 2011-2012. The race fee is still incredibly good value at just $80 for the entire year. This entitles you to race in ALL club races, including the Wednesday night series, Rum and Ladies races, the 2-handed series, and more. Once you’ve paid your fee, you’ll also be eligible to race in many of the Russell and Kerikeri club races throughout the year too.

Course Sheets

The OCC Winter 2012 Course Sheet for Sunday racing throughout Winter is now available for download. Just click here to download the Winter 2012 course sheet.

Sailing Instructions

While you’re at it, don’t forget to download a copy of the latest version of the OCC Racing Rules for 2011-2012 (Version 2). These were updated on 10 November 2011, so if you downloaded yours before then, please have another look. The changes to the rules are clearly illustrated in this Notice to Competitors. The amendment is intended to make sure competitors finish races in clear water in the channel, when finishing a race from the Eastern (Waikare) side.

Race Results

For the latest race results, see the articles on the Latest News page, or ‘Like’ the OCC Facebook page to be informed when results are published.

Protests and Requsts for Redress

All skippers and crew involved in racing should familiarise themselves with this Information on Protests and Requests for Redress. While yacht racing is all about having fun, there are still rules to be followed to ensure safe and fair racing for all. Please download and read this information so you are familiar with the process to be followed if you do find yourself in a protest situation.

Ladies racing

Opua Cruising Club runs the only regular, year-round ladies yacht racing north of Auckland. If you’re keen to get involved, please get in touch – there are plenty of opportunites to jump on board a boat and get out on the water. You can also now post your crew requirements – whether it’s ‘crew wanted’ or you’re a ‘crew available’, in the Classifieds section

Great Escapes Yacht Charters, in conjunction with Opua Cruising Club, are also offering Ladies Intro to Sailing courses. If you’re interested in learning to sail, download the Ladies Intro to Sailing flyer – although it refers to the first course in August 2011, you can still contact Ian Templeman if you’re interested, and once we get enough interested parties, we’ll put a course on for you.
