Don’t forget there’s a ladies race again this Sunday due to popular demand. We’d love to see some more boats out on the water, and remember the rules have been relaxed so that only a female helmswoman is required to compete in ladies races over winter – the rest of the crew can be male.
To all keen yachtsmen and women out there, Explore NZ, with the assistance of Opua Cruising Club, are holding a one day regatta on 3rd September 2011. An invitation is extended to sailors from all the clubs in the Bay for a day of good racing, followed by an evening social ashore in Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island.
There will be 2 divisions – Fast and Not-So-Fast (suitable for open boats like the Flying Fifteens), with the first race starting at 1000hrs out near the Brampton Buoy and finishing in the islands close to Otehei Bay. A short lunch break will be followed by an afternoon race of about 3hrs. At the end of racing, sailors are invited to head ashore at Otehei Bay for an evening buffet meal and prize giving.
Low tide is at 1726hrs which means smaller shallow draft yachts will be able to go into the bay and anchor. There may also be some space on the wharf to go alongside. Larger, deeper draft yachts will need to anchor in ether Paradise or Cable Bay depending on the weather, and Explore NZ/Otehei Bay will run a shuttle boat to transfer you ashore.
The race entry fee of $40 per sailor includes your evening meal, entertainment and prize giving. Full bar service will also be available (drinks not include in the entry). There is also the option of staying in the cabins at Otehei bay for $30 (a little more comfortable than trying to sleep on a sport boat!) and enjoy breakfast for an extra $15. Breakfast is also available if pre-booked to all sailors who have spent the night out on the yachts.
Sunday morning provides an opportunity to enjoy the island before heading home, while the really keen racers can head back to your home club for regular winter Sunday racing.
We’d like to try and make this an annual event at the end of the winter season, so we’d appreciate your support in making this a day of great racing.
Lion New Zealand will be sailing in the regatta and has space available for anyone wishing to join us. Tickets available to purchase at Explore NZ – just call 09 402 8234.
Look forward to seeing you all out there.
